The site is situated along Tolchester Road (MD Rt. 445), not far from the Chesapeake Bay. The area is characterized as rural with small farms and residences. D-4-1 was under the control of the 2AA Regional Command, Fort Meade, Maryland, and was operated by the Department of Defense (DOD). Of the total of 340 acres originally acquired for the site, the DOD utilized 235 acres for three operations: the Control Area (23 acres), the Housing Area (12 acres) and the Launch Area (22 acres), the remaining 178 acres were left undeveloped.
The Launch Area contained a concrete missile magazine area, approximately one-acre in size, which housed six magazines. There were several administrative, maintenance and barracks buildings on the eastern half of the site. The remaining 23 acres of the Launch Area were undeveloped.
Down the road from D-4-1 was the Tolchester Marina and yacht club, which we were a member of. There was an old abandon amusement park on the right side of the road about 1 mile from Tolchester Beach. On the Beach was a very large building that was used during the 1890's for beach entertainment.
